Angler reels in rare toothy fish from Maryland creek

An angler casting his line in a Maryland creek reeled in something highly unusual for the state: a fish with a full set of human-like teeth.

Jeremy Cooper said he initially thought he had caught a sunfish in Conococheague Creek in Kemps Mill, but he soon noticed the fish had a mouth full of human-like teeth.

Cooper sent photos of the fish to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, which identified it as a red-bellied pacu, a South American fish related to the piranha.

Pacu fish aren't native to Maryland waters, but have been spotted in the state's waterways seven times since 1995, most recently in the Gunpowder River in 2006.

The Department of Natural Resources said pacu are frequently kept in private aquariums, which was the likely origin of Cooper's catch.

"The fish was most likely released from someone's aquarium," a spokesperson told WMAR-TV. "We never encourage people to release their pets to Maryland's waters because of the threat of introducing a species that could establish itself or the threat of introducing disease."

Oklahoma boy Charlie Clinton, 11, made headlines last year when he caught a pacu in a neighborhood pond. State officials that fish was also most likely an illegally-released pet.

Painting bought for $50 at barn sale expected to fetch up to $200,000

A painting bought for $50 at a New York barn sale is headed to auction and expected to fetch up to $200,000 after being identified as a 1912 piece by Canadian artist Emily Carr.

New York-based art dealer Allen Treibitz said he was at a barn sale in the Hamptons when the painting, which depicts a carved grizzly bear at the top of a totem pole, caught his eye.

"You could just tell that painting had something special about it besides the fact that it was so legibly signed, which is not often the case with most art that you see," Treibitz told Global News. "So that helped a little, but it definitely had a look and it was definitely very interesting."

He bought the painting for $50, and his research soon determined it was a piece called Masset Q.C.I. and was painted in 1912 by Carr.

The painting is now one of four works by Carr due to be auctioned by the Heffel Gallery next month in Toronto. It is expected to sell for between $100,000 and $200,000.

"I've found some interesting things in my lifetime," Treibitz said. "This is the most significant find I've ever had."

Long-lost wedding video returned to couple after 57 years

A couple living in Australia were reunited with a long-lost video of their wedding in Scotland after 57 years thanks to a Facebook post.

Terry Cheyne of Aberdeen, Scotland, said he had amassed a large collection of Super 8 films over the years, most of which he shot himself, but when he decided to have his collection transferred to DVD in April of this year he discovered the reels included a wedding between two people he didn't recognize.

He posted a still image from the film to a local Facebook group, but six months went by without any leads on the identity of the couple.

The photo was recently shared to a group for natives of Aberdeen's Mastrick area and it came to the attention of Aileen Turnbull.

Turnbull, 77, who lives in Brisbane, Australia, said she had only been a member of the Facebook group for five minutes when she spotted her own wedding photo.

"I was looking through Facebook, and up came this wedding photograph. My husband was sitting here, I turned to him and I said 'There's our wedding photograph,'" she told BBC Scotland.

Turnbull and her husband, Bill, 77, married in 1967 at Mastrick Church in Aberdeen before later moving to Brisbane.

The couple said they had only watched their wedding video once before discovering they accidentally left it in a borrowed projector they had returned to the owner.

"I messaged Terry and it just grew from there. His uncle was the guy we'd borrowed the projector from to see the film after the wedding, he worked with my husband," Turnbull said.

Cheyne sent the Turnbulls a digitized copy of the wedding video.

"It just seems strange for me to see my mother and my father, not just in a photograph but there actually moving and walking," Aileen Turnbull said. "And my husband, he saw his grandmother and his grandfather, who was 100 when he died."

She said seeing the video after 57 years "was just absolutely amazing — I still can't believe it really."

Mailed job application returned to woman after nearly 50 years

A British woman who applied by mail for a job as a motorcycle stunt rider said her application was returned to her after nearly 50 years lost at a post office.

Tizi Hodson, 70, of Lincolnshire, said she mailed out the application in January 1976, hoping to land her dream job as a motorcycle stunt rider.

"I always wondered why I never heard back about the job. Now I know why," Hodson told the BBC.

The letter recently arrived in her mailbox with a note at the top saying: "Late delivery by Staines Post Office. Found behind a [drawer]. Only about 50 years late."

Hodson said the application letter's return came as a shock.

"How they found me when I've moved house 50-odd times, and even moved countries four or five times, is a mystery," she said. "It means so much to me to get it back all this time later. I remember very clearly sitting in my flat in London typing the letter."

"Every day I looked for my post but there was nothing there and I was so disappointed because I really, really, wanted to be a stunt rider on a motorcycle," she said.

Hodson said failing to land the job didn't curb her daredevil instincts: she went on to perform jobs including snake handler, aerobatic pilot and flying instructor.

The Swansea Building Society received an even older delivery recently when a postcard arrived at the address currently occupied by the group after being mailed to a previous resident 121 years earlier.

A spokeswoman for the Royal Mail said the story behind the postcard's late arrival is unclear, but it was most likely found somewhere and placed back into the mail recently, rather than having been lost in the mail for over a century.

Raccoon causes chaos in the stands at Denver Broncos game

The on-field drama at a game between the Denver Broncos and the Las Vegas Raiders was briefly eclipsed by the action that unfolded in the stands when a raccoon caused chaos in the crowd.

The scene unfolded in Section 31 of Empower Field during Sunday's game when a raccoon emerged and ran through the crowd of cheering fans.

Some witnesses captured photos and videos showing the raccoon dodging capture attempts, and at one point being grabbed by a fan who used his bare hands to detain the animal, which was then placed in a trash bin.

Another video shows police attempting to transfer the raccoon from the bin to a cage, but the furry football fan managed to break free of its captors to once again run loose inside the stadium.

A Broncos spokesperson said the raccoon was eventually ejected from the stadium safely.

"There was a rare occurrence that required Animal Control during Sunday's game at Empower Field at Mile High that was promptly resolved in coordination with our stadium staff," the representative told KDVR-TV.

Some fans branded the interloper the "rally raccoon" after the Broncos came back from an early deficit to defeat the Raiders 34-18.

Artwork mistaken for litter asked from mysets trash bin

A work of art was rescued from the trash at a Dutch museum after being mistaken for what it depicts: a pair of abandoned beer cans.

All The Good Times We Spent Together, a 1988 piece by French artist Alexandre Lavet, appears at first glance to be a pair of empty beer cans abandoned on the floor.

"However, a closer look reveals that these dented cans were meticulously hand-painted with acrylics, with each detail painstakingly replicated," the LAM museum in Lisse said in a news release.

The museum said Lavet's piece was on display in the facility's glass elevator shaft, where they were mistaken for actual litter by an elevator technician.

"The theme of our collection is food and consumption," said Sietske van Zanten, the museum's director. "Our art encourages visitors to see everyday objects in a new light. By displaying artworks in unexpected places, we amplify this experience and keep visitors on their toes."

Museum employees who noticed the artwork was missing launched a search and managed to rescue the intact cans from a trash bin that was about to be thrown out.

Van Zanten said the technician who threw the art away was filling in for the museum's usual elevator technician, who is well-acquainted with the museum's collection.

"He was just doing his job in good faith," van Zanten said. "In a way, it's a testament to the effectiveness of Alexandre Lavet's art."

Ohio-based eatery breaks world record for hot dog photos

An Ohio-based restaurant chain teamed up with its fans to break the Guinness World Record for the most photos of hot dogs uploaded to Instagram in one hour.

Cincinnati-based Skyline Chili celebrated its 75th anniversary by taking on the record-breaking challenge with the help of fans using the hashtag #SkylineChiliWorldRecord.

The goal set by Guinness World Records was 500 wiener photos, and that number was more than doubled during the 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday window.

A Guinness World Records adjudicator confirmed there were enough qualifying photos to take the record, although the official final number is still being calculated.

The first 250 Instagram users to participate in the challenge were rewarded with $15 Skyline Chili gift cards, and all participants were entered into a drawing for the chance to win 500 free cheese coney dogs, aka chili dogs.

Skyline's anniversary was also celebrated by Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval, who wrote on social media: "75 years of @Skyline_Chili time! Happy Birthday and thank you for all of the ways you serve our city."

Farm creates massive 'Beetlejuice' pumpkin mosaic

The British farm that holds the Guinness World Record for largest pumpkin mosaic unveiled this year's gourd art, a tribute to the new film Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice.

Farmer Ian Nelson of Sunnyfields Farm, near Totton, Hampshire, said the farm's fans voted on the theme for this year's pumpkin mosaic, and 70 percent of votes went to the character played by Michael Keaton in Tim Burton's 1988 film and this year's sequel.

The farm posted a video to Facebook showing a time-lapse of how the mosaic was created.

"There are over 10,000 pumpkins and squashes in the mosaic, it took about 50 hours of planning on paper and then we built it in one day with 15 people starting at 9:30 a.m. and finishing at 4:30 p.m.," Nelson told The Portsmouth News.

"All of the pumpkins in the mosaic are naturally colored, a lot of them are edible and they're the same pumpkins we've got around the fields that visitors can pick up, put in their wheelbarrow and buy to take home," he said.

It is not yet clear whether this year's mosaic will take the Guinness World Record from Sunnyfield Farm's 2023 mosaic, which depicted Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas. That mosaic covered an area of 2,081 square feet.

Las Vegas man climbs the height of Everest in his own home

A Las Vegas man spent nearly 23 hours going up and down the stairs in his home to break the Guinness World Record for the fastest time to ascend and descend the height of Mount Everest on stairs.

Sean Greasley had to climb — and descend — a distance of 29,031 feet and 5.5 inches on the stairs in his home to match the height of the world's tallest mountain.

He livestreamed his attempt on YouTube, finishing after 22 hours, 57 minutes and 2 seconds.

"I decided to break this record because nobody has done this before, not from sea level anyway," Greasley told Guinness World Records. "I wanted to raise money for suicide prevention, so I figured I would combine these two goals into one major goal. We were nearing the end of COVID-19 and I was having a lot of mental problems and issues, which is why this charity is very close to my heart."

Greasley added in some of his own rules during the attempt, including never touching the banister while on the stairs, since "you wouldn't have that on Everest."

British zoo announces hatching of two endangered African penguins

A zoo in England announced the hatching of two baby African penguin chicks in what is being hailed as an important step for the conservation of the endangered species.

The Hertfordshire Zoo said the chicks hatched in August, and "are already showing signs of independence, swaggering out of the nest earlier than expected for their species."

"This early development is a testament to their healthy and thriving nature," the zoo said in a news release.

The chicks were dubbed Noel and Liam, in honor of the Gallagher brothers from the band Oasis.

"These cheeky little birds have captured the hearts of zookeepers and visitors alike with their mischievous personalities, reminiscent of the legendary Oasis front man brothers," the zoo said.

However, "unlike their musical counterparts, Oasis, who famously split, these penguin chicks have remained inseparable, showcasing a heart warming bond," officials wrote.

The zoo said the "likely and energetic" personalities of Noel and Liam have led to their being nicknamed "the little terrors."

African penguins are listed as an endangered species, with an estimated 40,000 still living in the wild.
