World's largest soccer ball on display in Massachusetts

The Massachusetts Port Authority officially broke a Guinness World Record by creating a soccer ball measuring 47.9 feet in diameter.

The soccer ball, installed in Piers Park II in East Boston, was approved by Guinness World Records and officially took the title of the world's largest soccer ball from a 39.98-foot ball created in Qatar in 2013.

The ball, created by Britten, Inc. and Creative Inflatables in Ohio, celebrates the FIFA World Cup games that will be played at Boston Stadium in Foxborough in June and July.

The massive soccer ball will be on display to the public until June 18. Massport officials said the materials used to create the ball will be recycled.

German man assembles world's largest Lego sausage

A German man assembled 65,000 Lego bricks into the shape of a bratwurst and bun to break the Guinness World Record for the largest Lego brick sausage.

Tommy Schmidt, 45, said the idea for the unusual project came from sausage producer Die Thüringer.

"I have always enjoyed taking on unusual challenges. When the meat and sausage producer Die Thüringer from my region approached me with the idea of building something out of LEGO, we started developing the concept together. It quickly became clear to us that it had to be something big," he told the record-keeping organization.

He said the record attempt paid tribute to his home region.

"In my home region of Thuringia in Germany, the bratwurst is a local specialty that has since become known around the world. Together with the meat and sausage producer Die Thüringer we wanted to create a tribute to the famous bratwurst and to our region," Schmidt said.

Boston bars say Scottish soccer fans are drinking them dry

Scottish soccer fans are being credited with a boom in Boston beer sales that caused some bars in the city to run dry.

Sam Adams' Boston Taproom said the influx of Scottish fans in town to attend FIFA World Cup games caused it to sell four times as much Samuel Adams Boston Lager from Thursday to Sunday as the bar normally would on a four-day weekend.

The tap room ended up running out of Boston Lager, leading the company to schedule an emergency delivery on Saturday morning.

Noelle Somers, chief operating officer at Hennessy's Bar in downtown Boston, said the facility sold out of beer on Sunday.

"We've been here for over 30 years, and we've never seen anything like it," Somers told The Boston Globe. "We tripled St. Patrick's Day."

World's largest and smallest penny farthings unveiled in London

An Australian man teamed up with cyclists in Britain to break the Guinness World Records for the largest and smallest penny farthings.

Dan Bolwell brought his creations to the June 13 City of London Nocturne cycling event, where Neil Laughton, head of the Penny Farthing Club, took the 9-foot, 3-inch bicycle — dubbed "Big Bertha" — for a 330-foot ride.

Laughton, who had to wear stilts just to reach the pedals, successfully completed the ride, making him the new co-holder of the title for the world's largest rideable penny farthing along with Bolwell.

Bolwell earned his second Guinness World Record for the day when Woodward siblings Flo, 7, and Finn, 6, each took a ride on a penny farthing measuring just 2 feet tall. The tiny bike, dubbed "Little Bee," earned the record for the world's smallest rideable penny farthing.

Beavers solve flooding problem at London Underground station

A London Underground station once plagued by constant flooding is now staying dry thanks to some recent arrivals in the neighborhood: beavers.

The Greenford subway station and surrounding streets in the Ealing borough of London used to experience regular flooding during rainstorms, to the point where officials had considered creating an artificial reservoir to alleviate the situation.

Those plans were canceled when local conservationists suggested they inside reintroduce beavers, which went extinct in Britain about 400 years ago due to over-hunting.

The Ealing Beaver Project moved a family of five wild beavers into the 24-acre area known as Paradise Fields in 2023. The animals have since transformed the area into a natural wetland, and the Greenfield station ceased flooding as a result.

"Everything downstream is much more protected from flooding than it was before, all because they want to hold that water back so that they have enough water to swim in and feel safe," Şeniz Mustafa of the Ealing Beaver Project told CBC News.

Aussie town crier's 122.4-decibel yell earns Guinness World Record

An Australian town crier's powerful voice earned him a Guinness World Record when he let out a yell measured at 122.4 decibels.

Joseph McGrail-Bateup, aka Lord Joseph, the official town crier for Canberra and Queanbeyan, told Guinness World Records his pipes have not always been so potent.

"When I was a kid I didn't really have a loud voice, I was very shy, withholding all that stuff until I left school and I joined the theater. It was very clear then that I needed to pipe up, make myself loud," he said. "So, I trained in the theater where you didn't use microphones or anything like that and I got loud and as the years went by, louder."

McGrail-Bateup was appointed town crier in 2017, and started participating in Ancient and Honorable Guild of Australian Town Criers competitions in 2022.

"In the first year I managed to take some places in the event, but in 2024 I took first place away for the loudest cry at 98 dB," he said.

McGrail-Bateup broke the Guinness World Record for the loudest shout by an individual (male) with a reading of 122.4 decibels in May.

"At the beginning of this year I was wondering what I could do that was a little bit different, so not being unfamiliar with Guinness World Records — I am also a former holder for archery — I looked up shouting and here I am, six months later with the record," he said.

"My daughter and I worked together to find the best word to hit the decibels. The previous word was 'quiet' but that wasn't quite loud enough and we ended up settling for the word 'now.'"

Driver Is Stunned As 12 'Scared' Puppies Appear On The Road Ahead

The other day, a Tulsa, Oklahoma, resident was driving down the road when they suddenly spotted some dogs running down the street. The driver couldn’t believe their eyes as more and more scared pups seemed to appear out of nowhere.

They realized that there were not 10, not 11, but 12 dogs on the loose and in danger of getting run over. The person who discovered the terrified babies called Puppy Haven Rescue for help.
“They were … terrified of cars,” Breanne Luiskutty, president of Puppy Haven Rescue, told The Dodo.

Luiskutty noticed that every single one of the dogs was male. That, combined with the sheer number of dogs abandoned together, began to raise some red flags for her.

“Because these are small-breed dogs with poodle mixed in, they are likely from a breeder,” Luiskutty said.
Unfortunately, Puppy Haven Rescue sees animals abandoned by backyard breeders all the time. Once the dogs no longer serve a purpose for the breeders, they’re discarded.

The dogs were all dirty, hungry and disoriented. Puppy Haven Rescue took in 10 of the 12 abandoned pups and distributed them to foster homes.

“The dogs were very scared the first night they went home,” Luiskutty said.

Skateboarder crosses the United States coast-to-coast in 39 days

A skateboarder traveled from California to Florida in just 39 days in an attempt to break his own Guinness World Record.

Chad Caruso made the journey of more than 3,000 miles from Venice Beach, Calif., to Jacksonville, Fla., between May 1 and June 8, averaging 72 miles a day.

Caruso, who chronicled his journey on YouTube, previously skated from Venice Beach to Virginia Beach, Va., in 57 days, 6 hours and 56 minutes in 2023. That trip earned him the Guinness World Records title for the fastest crossing of America on a skateboard.

He said his latest trip was about both breaking his own record and celebrating 10 years of sobriety.

"Skateboarding was the thing that kept me out of trouble. I did it my whole life. I was obsessed with it. Got injured and I ended up quitting," Caruso told Action News Jax. "Brought it back and everything turned out better."

Seattle breaks Guinness World Record with dim sum party

A Seattle neighborhood broke a Guinness World Record by gathering 830 people to eat dim sum together.

The Chinatown International District's summer kickoff block party on Thursday hosted the Guinness World Records attempt for the largest dim sum dinner.

The previous record was set by 764 people at an event hosted by radio station WSFM in Sydney, Australia, in 2019.

Organizers of the Seattle attempt said an estimated 900 people sat down to eat dim sum, but only 830 qualified for the record because some got out of their seats before the official headcount.

Dropped sunglasses lead to man getting trapped in campground toilet

Authorities in California said an attempt to retrieve a pair of dropped sunglasses from a campground toilet led to a man having to be rescued from the sewage tank.

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded Saturday alongside Cal Fire personnel when a man was reported to be trapped in the holding tank of a toilet vault at Camp Edison in Shaver Lake.

"This is a facility with no plumbing, so it essentially operates like a porta potty," the sheriff's office said on social media.

The rescuers learned the man had attempted to reach into the toilet to retrieve a pair of dropped sunglasses and ended up falling in.

"After spending close to 15 minutes in the tank, deputies and firefighters were able to pull the man out to safety. Due to his exposure to urine, fecal matter and chemicals, he was put through a decontamination process," the post said.
