Man charged after taking bird into bar and bragging about giving it beer

A man from Greensburg, Pennsylvania, is facing charges of animal cruelty after taking a bird into a bar and bragging about feeding it beer.

On February 21, a bartender at Callaghan’s Bar in Greensburg, Pennsylvania, made a call to police after Timothy Grace brought a parakeet in via his back pocket. An animal in a bar is nothing out of the order, but keeping it in his back pocket was only the start of things.

According to KDKA News, police said that Grace had been “bragging to other people that were inside the bar that he feeds the parakeet marijuana and has it drink beer on a daily basis.”

The 40-year-old claimed to be the owner of the parakeet. The bird has since been taken in by an aviary expert, who revealed that it has a broken leg, as well as respiratory issues.

Grace is facing animal cruelty charges, which is a felony, for his role in causing the bird to have ill health.

He could face prison time and a fine for his treatment of the animal, should the court decide to punish him as such.If found guilty, the 40-year-old will also be unable to keep animals for a yet to be determined period of time in the future.

The bird, who is called Blue Skies, has been recovering with the PEARL Parrot Rescue in Pittsburgh, and has started “breathing right.”

Bottle of wine from 1945 sells for a record-breaking $812,500

A bottle of wine from 1945 became the most expensive bottle of the beverage ever sold at auction when it fetched a price of $812,500.

Auction house Acker said the 750 ml bottle of 1945 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, originally sourced from the personal wine cellar of Robert Drouhin, fetched the record-breaking price at its La Paulée auction during the weekend.

The previous most expensive bottle of wine sold at auction was set at $558,000 in 2018.

"The 1945 Romanée-Conti represents the final vintage produced before Domaine de la Romanée-Conti replanted its oldest vines — grapes that had survived phylloxera, two World Wars and nearly a century of Burgundy history," the auction house said in a news release. "With production extremely limited, surviving bottles have long been considered the pinnacle of wine collecting, with many connoisseurs believing the pre-phylloxera vines add an unmatched depth and complexity to the wine."

Acker Chairman John Kapon said the wine is worth the price.

"I've had the privilege of tasting the 1945 Romanée-Conti just three times in my life, and it is the greatest wine I've ever tasted," he said.

Chesney the kangaroo scales tall fence and flees petting zoo for three days on the lam

How does a kangaroo escape a petting zoo?

It’s not the opening line to a dad joke. If you’re Chesney the kangaroo, you scale an eight-foot (2 1/2 meter) fence and go on the lam for three days, giving your keeper sleepless nights and sending residents of a small Wisconsin town on a search that would end happily on Saturday.

The unprecedented leap at Sunshine Farm in Necedah, Wisconsin, last week was precipitated by some stray dogs that rushed the enclosure and spooked the 16-month-old Chesney, said his keeper, Debbie Marland. She and friends then trekked hither and yon in this town about 160 miles (255 kilometers) northwest of Milwaukee.

They chased reports of sightings and even rented heat-seeking drones, which proved effective in narrowing down the wanderings of the high-jumping adventurer.

“I was putting on about 37,000 steps per day looking for him,” Marland said Sunday. “I haven’t done so much exercise in a very long time.”

Chesney and his roommate Kenny are named for country-music starKenny Chesney. They’re among 25 animals at Sunshine Farm, with horses, sheep, alpacas, Kunekune pigs, Highland cows and a Bactrian camel. The farm is generally open Fridays through Sundays from mid-May through mid-November and tours are offered to visitors who can interact with the animals.

Chesney escaped about 11:15 a.m. last Wednesday. Though he stayed within a three-mile (5-kilometer) radius of the farm, he kept his pursuers guessing.

Colton Johnson, owner of Midwest Aerial Drone Services, has used heat-sensing drones to help hunters recover deer and reunite missing dogs with their owners. Add a kangaroo to the list.

Johnson spent three days trailing Chesney alongside Marland and a team of volunteers. His strategy was similar to the ones he uses to find lost pets, but Johnson said the appearance of Chesney’s heat signature on the drone footage was unique.

“It almost looked like a dinosaur running through the woods,” Johnson said. “It’s got a long tail, and the way it was moving and hopping, that’s the only way that I can describe it.”

The team caught up with Chesney on Wednesday and again Thursday night, but Johnson said the frightened kangaroo slipped away — once by jumping into a cold river — and Johnson lost track on the drone.

According to Marland’s friend, Stacy Brereton, who helps out at the farm routinely, Friday was a tough day. No one had spotted Chesney all day and searchers feared he had wandered farther afield into even more unfamiliar territory, Brereton said.

Then, Friday night, Chesney was discovered nestled under a tree in a wooded area. A group of searchers surrounded him, but ever fleet of foot — 20 mph (32 kph) is no stretch for him — Chesney eluded them.

Marland returned to the area Saturday morning with Chesney’s favorite treats and pieces of material that had his and Kenny’s scent. Other searchers later joined her. But with no sign of the kangaroo, they started packing up. Just then, they spotted the long-eared kangaroo with outsize back legs approaching.

Brereton stepped up with a delicate touch.

“He had a very calm attitude when he walked up, obviously you could tell he wasn’t in fight-or-flight mode, so I just went with that,” Brereton said. “I just stayed calm with him and I just kind of went and sat and let him come to me.”

Chesney heard the voices and wanted attention, said Brereton, who eventually scooped up the 40-pound (18-kilogram) animal.

“I do believe he heard our comforting voices, he smelled the familiar smells of home and it just made him feel safe,” said Brereton, adding, “I’m just glad he loves me as much as I love him.”

Marland said the “the community really did come together” for the kangaroo, who is now something of a celebrity. A Sunshine Farm fan has written a children’s book about Chesney’s adventures, which Marland hopes to publish and sell to recoup some of the search costs.

Kenny, who with his marsupial mate has the run of Marland’s house, was happy to be reunited with Chesney. Though hungry and tired, Chesney was otherwise healthy but will get a checkup with the veterinarian shortly.

20-year-old breaks record for labeling a map of Europe

A 20-year-old geography whiz from China showed off his skills by breaking the Guinness World Record for identifying European countries.

The record-keeping organization said Jonathan Feather Ruggles earned the record for the fastest time to identify and type all European countries on a map using Sporcle by completing the task in just 45.85 seconds.

"I'm not actually sure what my interest spawned from," Ruggles told Guinness World Records, "But I've loved [geography] for a long time, and I've been doing the Sporcle geography quizzes since then too. In middle school, I would also play Hearts of Iron IV, which is a World War II simulator — that got me interested in geography of the whole world and history."

He was inspired to pursue the record after talking with his friend, Buffy Bui, who previously broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest time to identify and type all of the flags of Oceania using Sporcle.

"Seeing that there were other Sporcle records available, I just thought to myself, I can probably do these," he said, "and tried doing them as quickly as possible!"

Chinese man rescued from ‘zip tie escape challenge’ after delivery man alerts police

A Chinese man who became trapped while taking part in a viral “zip tie escape challenge” at home called for help and was rescued by a passing delivery man.

The case involving the man from Guangzhou in southern China’s Guangdong province was recently reported by the local fire department to raise public awareness.

A delivery man passing by the man’s rented home heard him calling for help and notified the police.

Firefighters arrived, prised open the gate and discovered the man tied up tightly on a bed.

He was wrapped in a cotton quilt, then tied by a fishing net and lastly, tied up by several long zip ties from his neck all the way to his ankles.

Temperatures in Guangzhou have been around 20 degrees Celsius recently.

According to a firefighter, Liu Junjie, the man had done all the restraining himself.

He was taking part in a viral online challenge called “zip tie escape”, which features people tying themselves up before trying to free themselves.

A video posted last year showing a man successfully breaking free from such ties on his wrists and ankles went viral. It amassed nearly 120,000 likes.
Some attempted to copy his success but trapped themselves.

They ended up calling food delivery service and waited for the delivery men to help set them free.

Some videos used failures to meet the challenge as a selling point, as many people found the challengers’ embarrassing situation and the delivery men’s reaction hilarious.

As the Guangzhou man’s case went viral online, many people were curious how he managed to tie himself up in such a way.
