Baby born in microbrewery parking lot honored with special beer A baby born in the parking lot of his parents' favorite microbrewery in Michigan was named after the business, which in turn created a special brew to honor the newborn. Aaron and Kyle Baker were on their way from Vicksburg to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo on the baby's due date when they realized they would not make it in time. They called for an ambulance and pulled over into the parking lot at One Well Brewing, which happens to be their favorite microbrewery, and baby Forrest Wells Baker was born mere moments later. "We've been joking that Forrest just wanted to swing by for a quick beer on the way to the hospital, just like his dad would," Kyle Baker told MLive. "When people first heard, everybody thought we were just sitting in here having a beer when I went into labor." One Well Brewing celebrated baby Forrest Wells' arrival by coming up with a blood orange blonde ale, which his parents were invited to come help mix at the brewery. The beer, aptly named Special Delivery, is due to be tapped later this month. One Well owner Chris O'Neill joked that while it will be another 21 years before baby Forrest Wells can enjoy a pint, his arrival might earn him "free beer for life." "The One Well Promise, have a baby in the parking lot, the baby gets free beer for life," he said. |

Florida man returns home after Milton to find alligator in his pool A Florida man returned home after three days of sheltering from Hurricane Milton to find an alligator swimming laps in his pool. Emile De Cuba said he returned to his home in Stuart after three days at his mother-in-law's Vero Beach home and was relieved to see his house was not seriously damaged by the storm. He said his relief quickly turned to shock when he spotted an alligator inside his swimming pool. "I came home yesterday at around 11:30, and when I went by my sliding door I went 'Woah,'" De Cuba told WPTV. De Cuba contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, which dispatched trappers to remove the reptile. "The yard is pretty guarded, we have a wooden fence on one side and a chain-link fence on the other with a bunch of vegetation," De Cuba said. "The wildlife officer told me that it probably went over the chain-link fence because they can climb those." He said the alligator likely wandered over from a nearby retention pond. De Cuba said he will install another barrier at the top of the chain-link fence to prevent future gator incursions. The alligator was far from being the largest animal rescued from a pool in recent days — police responded to a Bedford, N.H., home earlier this month when a moose fell through a pool cover and became stranded in the water. |

World's largest pair of jeans is taller than the Tower of Pisa The world's largest pair of jeans has been unveiled in China - and the supersized clothing item is taller than an iconic European building. The gigantic denim claimed the record on 28 September when it was put on display in Fumian, Guangxi, China. The jeans stretch an impressive 76.34 m (250 ft 5 in) in length and have a waist circumference of 58.164 m (190 ft 10 in). To help you picture the size, the height of the jeans falls between the Tower of Pisa in Italy (55 m; 180 ft) and the Statue of Liberty, including the pedestal (93 m; 305 ft). Made from a staggering 5.5 km (18,044 ft 6 in) of fabric, they feature a 7.8-m-long (25 ft 59 in) zipper and a massive 1.2-m-diameter (3 ft 94 in) stainless steel button, weighing in at a remarkable 3.6 tons (7936.64 lb). Before this, the largest pair of jeans measured 65.50 m (214 ft 10 in) tall and 42.70 m (140 ft 1 in) wide, and was achieved by Paris Perú (Peru), in Lima, Peru, on 19 February 2019. Crafted entirely by Yixing Textile Co., Ltd. in Yulin City, the entire process - from design and weaving to cutting and sewing - was completed independently. It took 18 days and involved over 30 skilled garment workers to bring this piece of art to life. |

Missouri museum opens 100-year-old time capsule The National WWI Museum and Memorial in Kansas City, Mo., opened a 100-year-old time capsule that contained items including newspapers and a letter from President Calvin Coolidge. The time capsule was buried inside the museum's Liberty Memorial Tower in 1924, with instructions left to open the container in 100 years. The time capsule commemorated the memorial's dedication. The museum extracted the time capsule from the monument during the summer, a process that was complicated by 18 inches of limestone and concrete. Officials said the extraction was also made difficult by the presence of nitrate film in the container, which is known to be highly flammable. The time capsule's contents were revealed during a Wednesday ceremony. The objects included a copy of the U.S. Constitution, newspapers, a Bible and a copy of the U.S. declaration of war from April 1917. The box also contained letters, including one from President Calvin Coolidge and several from Allied commanders who attended the Liberty Memorial's 1921 groundbreaking ceremony. The time capsule also held a Nov. 1, 1921, printing plate from the Kansas City Star. The copper box bore multiple engraved signatures from people who officials were unable to identify, but they are believed to be members of the team who assembled the time capsule. |

Canadian man walks 38 dogs at once to break world record A canine-loving Canadian broke a Guinness World Record by taking 38 dogs on a single walk for over half a mile. Mitchell Rudy led a pack of 38 leashed pooches on a .6-mile walk to break the Guinness World Record for the most dogs walked simultaneously by an individual. The previous record of 36 dogs was set in Goesan, South Korea. The dogs participating in Rudy's attempt were provided by the Korean K9 Rescue shelter. "All of these dogs, some of them are from the puppy mill industry, some of them are from former meat harvesting areas," Rudy told GWR. "These are dogs that have been rescued by KK9R but also other agencies inside of Korea. There's a lot of stigma around rescues. They're great animals, they deserve a good home, they just need a little bit of love." Rudy said his record attempt was aimed at promoting dog adoption. "We wanted to do something that made these dogs be the champions that they are," he said. "These are good dogs, they deserve homes." |

'Broken' lottery vending machine gives Ill. man $9.2M ticket An Illinois man said he only ended up winning a $9,200,000 lottery jackpot because he was having trouble with a vending machine. The player told Illinois Lottery officials his winning story began with a grocery-buying trip to the Jewel store in Addison. "It was a normal day, just like any other. I was picking up groceries at Jewel and on my way out the door, I decided to buy a lottery ticket," the man said. The player said he ran into some trouble while using the lottery vending machine. "I actually wanted to buy a ticket for a different game and the machine got stuck on Lotto. I was a bit frustrated. I said, 'What is going on? The machine won't give me the right game!' So I decided I may as well buy the Lotto ticket," he said. The ticket ended up scoring the man a $9,200,000 prize in the Aug. 24 lotto drawing. "The morning after the drawing, I scanned the ticket at a machine to check if it was a winner. When the machine showed the $9.2 million prize amount, I couldn't believe it!," the winner said. "I looked at my wife and she was completely speechless. We are laughing over how angry I was at the broken machine — and we're so grateful for how it all turned out." The Illinois Lottery said the jackpot is the second largest prize won in the Lotto game this year after a player scored $10.4 million in February. |

Seal on the track stops trains in Wellington Southbound trains on the Hutt Valley line were cancelled for a time on Wednesday morning due to a seal on the rail tracks. Police said the animal was reported to them just before 6am, it was believed to be on the tracks in Ngauranga. The seal appeared not to be well and the Department of Conservation had been called, they said. Northbound trains were running as usual. Metlink said four services were axed before 7am Wednesday and buses replacements had been provided, but space was limited. Just after 7am Metlink said it had clearance to resume services into Wellington. DOC ranger David Moss said the sub-adult fur seal was not an unusual site in Wellington - but this one was "quite skinny" and the fact it was not fazed by where it was could suggest it was fatigued. "In recent years, seals have turned up in several unusual places across New Zealand, including fish and chip shops, hardware stores, and even golf courses," Moss said. "Kekeno are cute, but they can give a serious bite, even when not in top condition, so we're really grateful we were called in the first instance." DOC rangers took it to the south coast where it was safely released. |

Mysterious holes on Florida riverbanks identified as 'catfish condos' Wildlife officials in Florida said mysterious holes appearing along the banks of the state's freshwater rivers have been identified as the work of invasive fish. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Research Institute said on social media that the holes have "become a common sight" on the state's riverbanks. Biologists identified the holes as "catfish condos" for invasive armored sailfin catfish, also known as plecos. "These burrows serve as nesting sites where the catfish protect their eggs and young," the post said. "However, this digging behavior can cause problems for Florida's freshwater ecosystems as they destabilize banks and contribute to erosion and increased turbidity in the water." The Research Institute said the issue should serve as a reminder of the dangers of releasing non-native species. "Invasive species like this one are often introduced to Florida's waterways when aquarium pets are released into the wild. While it may seem harmless, releasing pets can have serious consequences for the environment and wildlife that depend on these habitats," officials wrote. |

Cockatoo rescued after four weeks trapped inside grocery store A cockatoo that spent nearly a month trapped inside a supermarket in Sydney, Australia, was captured by a wildlife rescuer after weeks of attempts. The sulphur-crested cockatoo, dubbed Mickey by members of the public, flew into the Coles supermarket in Campbelltown's Macarthur Square shopping center through an open loading dock door and was unable to find his way back out. Mickey spent nearly a month evading capture attempts inside the store. "The poor bird hasn't had any dark for over four weeks and has been living on brioche and water [placed] by the night manager — who is very fond of the bird," Sydney Metropolitan Wildlife Services said on social media after an unsuccessful attempt to capture Mickey on Monday night. A rescuer with the group, named Ravi, returned to the store Tuesday with Doris, a free-flight trained sulphur-crested cockatoo. Doris was able to help Ravi put Mickey at ease and the bird was finally loaded into a crate for transport out of the store. Mickey, a bird native to the area, will be released back into the wild, rescuers said. "Mickey is looking pretty healthy, all things considered and will be released back home soon. We hope he stays out of trouble and lays off the brioche for many years to come," Sydney Metropolitan Wildlife Services said on social media Tuesday. |

Woman uses chopsticks to eat one grain of rice at a time, sets Guinness record A woman from Bangladesh used chopsticks to lift one grain of rice at a time and managed to eat a record-breaking 37 pieces in one minute. Sumaiya Khan, 24, told Guinness World Records she has been using chopsticks to eat all of her meals for a few years. "I had a thing for ramen back in the day, I was obsessed with ramen and loved Korean culture so that's when I got my own personal chopsticks and since then I've eaten almost all of my food using them, and especially since I'm Bangladeshi I eat rice almost every single day," Khan said. A coworker took note of Khan's rice-eating skills and suggested she might be able to break the record for the most rice grains eaten in one minute using chopsticks, which previously stood at 27. Khan easily defeated the record by eating 37 grains of rice, one at a time. "It feels surreal, it feels amazing and everyone around me is proud of me for actually attempting it," she said. "I feel proud of myself for doing it too because it's such a great thing to actually achieve, having your name out there in the world and being part of something so big, it's actually amazing and I'm honored and blessed and proud and every other good thing that I can say about it." |
